are you a yummy mummy?

absolutely...NOT.

i don't know how supermodel-mother-of-3 heidi klum (who apparently walked down the runway just only 3 weeks after the birth of her son) or the gorgeous united nations role model angelina jolie does it. and although i'm not a fan of posh spice a.k.a. victoria beckham, i marvel at how she's a size 0 (or minus 2, whatever suits her skinny frame) after 3 boys.

even local celebrities like wong li-lin, beatrice chia-richmond and zoe tay appear unscathed by pregnancy, with no trace of post-natal blubber.

how unfair.

perhaps i really shouldn't complain so much since i've lost about 10kg since terrorliza's birth 6 weeks ago. as many mums know, the last 5kg or so is usually the toughest to shed. and it's not scales that irritate me. it's the damn lumps at the wrong places - especially the tums, thighs, bloated face and arms.

i can fit into most of my tops, but can't bloody button my pants without taking in a huge big breath. i guess it's time to fight the flab and rid myself of the my jiggly, jelly-wobble belly!

wish i could be more disciplined and get off my dimpled ass to work on those abdominal crunches first before moving onto the other troubled spots. :(

Third Born

Well I can't be biased and not write something for terrorliza right? even though I'd my most difficult pregnancy of all this time round...now that she's out, all's forgiven. but not really forgotten. :P

Number Three: Wei

Third Born

The brightest star in the sky
The one we were destined to catch
A dazzling firecracker she turned out to be
With mighty lungs to match

The Rat is her Zodiac sign
And so is bold Aries the noble ram
With two sisters, Mummy and Daddy who adore her
She’s our beautiful sparkling gem

The latest family addition made her debut
On 18 April 2008 Friday
She’s a unique sweet and spicy concoction
Our third little Leonglet - Sook Mei

Second Born

Here's a poem for my beloved peanut, Wen.

Number Two: Wen

Second Born

18 August 2005
An extremely special Thursday
That’s when our peanut popped
And brightened our lives in a magical way

Born in the Year of the Rooster
She’s a darling baby Leo
Loved by Mummy and Daddy and big sis too
The perfect addition to our family trio

Cuddly and bright-eyed and adorable
She’s a rather feisty one
Already a champ in our eyes
Our second little Leonglet - Sook Mun

First Born

Here's a short poem written when Xian was born back in 2002...

Number One: Xian

First Born

Mummy's cherubic angel
Daddy's darling little girl
Kickin', wrigglin' and screamin' she did
Into her brand new world

Daddy's pretty princess
Mummy's precious pearl
Charming her way into our lives
With every gesture, smile and gurgle

Mummy's lovely baby doll
Daddy's apple-of-the-eye
The Chinese zodiac swift Steed reigns in her
As does the sign of the twins - Gemini

Tiny in size though she may be
But in our hearts she's a sure-fire win
Born 29 May 2002 on a Wednesday
Our first little Leonglet - Sook Yin

xian is 6

my eldest leonglet is 6 years old today.

just realised i'd never documented her birth as i started to blog only in late 2004, so i'm now making up for lost time.

i can still remember, 6 years ago, how i woke up early on that fateful wednesday morning and instinctively felt that the baby was going to pop. as a first time mother, i was totally clueless about childbirth and didn't realise that i was experiencing early labour - the contractions were too far apart but i was feeling uncomfortable and decided to visit the doctor.

trouble was that my gynae, dr lim, was away on vacation and my next check-up was on a friday, in 2 days' time. she had made arrangements with another covering doctor so i called dr heng and made my way down with the hub and MIL to bedok dr heng's clinic.

the foetus had just turned 38 weeks and i was surprised when dr heng checked my cervix and informed us that i was 3cm dilated. back then, i had no idea what she was talking about so she translated her med-speak to layman terms: "you've started your contractions though they're still too irregular. but you are due anytime. the baby could be out today, tomorrow or even next week. if you want, you can check yourself into the hospital or wait at home till the contractions become more regular and painful. hopefully the baby waits for dr lim to come back!"

my MIL was quite sure the baby wasn't due yet, but i remember telling myself that it's MY BODY and i know something's about to happen. we headed back to chinatown to buy a few last minute essentials (pots and such), rested at the hub's office where i called my now ex-boos to inform him that i'd be taking maternity leave and lunched. all this while, i was discomforted by several contractions. when we got home, i remember taking an afternoon nap, only to be rudely awakened by a more severe pain in the abdomen. and i also felt like i needed to crap...

that's when MIL reckoned it was time to go. i had a nice good scrub and shower, aware that i'd have to forfeit my usual showers once i started my confinement. i also had an early dinner at about 5-ish, called my parents to tell that i was going to the hospital, and the hub drove us (MIL in tow) to the hospital.

they wheeled me into the maternity ward at about 7pm - that's when my contractions became longer, got more painful and were spaced at about 15 minutes apart. i was till able to take it all in my stride and remained rather calm...and foolish.

but my cool and endurance were soon put to the test. at 9.15pm, the contractions were *killing* me. the nurses came in to check and realised i was about 5cm dilated. and then they broke the news that it was too late to administer the epidural, and my only relief for the pain was the gas. they later gave me a pethidine, but said it wasn't going to make much of a difference...

ARGHHHHHHHH.

it was too late to panic. i'd never even attended any pre-natal classes, so the hub and i just reacted to the best of our abilities and according to the situation. another stand-in doc arrived to deliver the baby and just before 10.30pm, xian was born.

and here she is now, 6 years later:

xian with her birthday cake
our first family photo with the latest addition, wei
we actually celebrated her birthday early this year as her cousins were going on a holiday and would've missed the cake-cutting.
how time flies. and she's embarking on a scary mission next year: primary school education. and my nightmare will officially begin as well.

but for now, i intend to let her relax, at least for the 6 remaining months before she steps into primary school.

happy 6th birthday, my beloved xian!

ebay baby

"Parents try to sell baby on eBay"

when i read this bit on news on ccn.com, i nearly dropped my own baby who was blissfully suckling, unaware that her mum was in shock.

this is the most ridiculous bit of news i've ever heard!

it ranks up there with this story of the severely overweight woman who didn't realise she was pregnant and gave birth to a healthy boy after she complained of stomachaches. read previous blog entry here.

of course the baby's mother claimed it was a joke. but this is no laughing matter. if you blog about it in a humourous fashion and your friends know you were just horsing around, that's acceptable. but not on a legal auction site!

poor baby.

what's the world coming to these days???!!!

ac + ed = great tv

i *totally* dig anderson cooper.

you may ask "anderson who?"

anderson cooper's the suave, intelligent and enormously multi-talented news anchor of CNN's Anderson Cooper 360° and is, without a doubt, the network's most handsome broadcaster. (he also bears a striking resemblance to hollywood actor and human rights activist richard gere).

i mean, just look at those dreamy, piercing blue eyes and chiseled features!

*swoooooooooon*

i'm not ashamed to admit that anderson cooper's one of the main reasons why i'm tuning in religiously to watch CNN whenever possible.

who cares if he's rumoured to be a closet gay who refuses to come out to play? out.com even ranked him as america's 2nd most powerful gay personality. it's just a another blow to women out there who want to lay claim on the yummilicious anderson cooper.

here's the AC 360 commercial:

and since we're on the topic of TV shows, i've become a huge huge fan of award-winning the ellen degeneres show, a daytime television talk show.

she's a spunky, funky one, that ellen. and openly gay. why, she even unabashedly announced her marriage to australian actress portia de rossi (she found fame on ally mcbeal where she played a lawyer) on her show a few weeks ago!

i enjoy watching ellen because she's a natural entertainer and doesn't even look her actual age of 50!

my favouritest segment is when the spontaneous comedian gets up to dance with her audience.:)

check out this video where she wriggles, jiggles and boogies to the groovy new madonna and justin timberlake's "four minutes" song:

ac and ed confirm my suspicion that gay people are hugely talented. this is my personal opinion of course.

and they both produce great stuff for TV viewing - wonderful programmes that keep my boredom at bay while at home. but when i head back to work come july, i'll have to give these two shows a miss! sadnessssssss!!!!

multi-taskin' mumsy

i've never been one to fully concentrate on doing a single deed at a time.

i can still recall my primary school days - when i reach home after school and to have lunch, i'd choose a story book and read while i munch. to me, the stories make the food taste better. of course, i'd spend over an hour to chow down my meal and inevitably get a bad report for time-wasting when mum asks our domestic helper how long i took to eat.

and when i became older, i'd scoop the food on my plate and glue my eyes on the goggle-box. why waste time sitting down to eat at the dining table? especially since as an only child in the family with working parents, i'd to eat alone. too boring.

it was the same thing when doing homework. i'd plonk myself in front of the TV and start writing, glancing up every few seconds or so to check out what's happening on screen. in the evenings when my folks come back and i'm banned from watching TV, i'd turn on the radio in my room while i finish up my work or revise for tests/exams.

and when i need to visit the loo for more than 1 minute, i grab whatever reading material that's available.

at work, i'd be doing several things at a time too. for example, when setting test papers, i have several internet explorer windows opened - google, facebook, msn, microsoft outlook (email). yes, these so-call distractions may seem to delay the completion of my tasks, but with my ultra short concentration span, they help to break the monotony of work and give me some breaks before i get back to my work.

naturally, such practices are frowned upon by many people (including my parents) who believe that it's much better to put in 100% into whatever you do. actually, i'm a workaholic and i take lots of pride in my work and i HATE to hand in a shoddy piece of trash. so i DO throw in 110% all the time. and even if it means i'd have to sacrifice some personal time or suffer inconvenience, i'd do my job well.

unfortunately i'm just not the sort who'd sit STILL and do something without my brain taking a slight detour.

my folks could never fully comprehend my attention-deficit behaviour but i managed to prove to them that i could still succeed by doing it MY way - when i spent 3 years at the university hostel and managed to graduate without failing anything. ;P

some things will never change - i still can't sit still.

the traditional chinese confinement practices decree that after giving birth, the mother must rest well. i totally agree with that, as would all the other mothers in the world who've have their bodies bruised and battered after childbirth. but it's just not my style to lie in bed ALL DAY LONG.

the minute i was back from the hospital, i was checking my emails and er...facebooking, and incurred the wrath of my well-meaning MIL who warned that i'd be plagued with severe backaches and rheumatism if i didn't rest my back. it's not that i'm being disrespectful on purpose, and i DID try to lie flat on my back. but you just can't tie a gemini down.

many friends were surprised to see me online - and i didn't mention this to all of them, but there were times i was breastfeeding the baby while chatting with them on msn or on the phone. and during meal times, i have to somehow balance her on my lap or cradle her with one arm while i quickly eat. (done when there's no extra pairs of hands to watch her especially when she refuses to sleep and yells non-stop). and with 2 older girls around, it gets a little chaotic sometimes with wei in one arm while helping wen brush her teeth/change or getting them ready for school etc.

multi-tasking - all in a day's work.

and when i got bored with chatting or facebooking, i turned back to my ol' faithful - the television. now cable TV at my fingertips i've got a plethora of channels to surf. my favourites include CNN, Discovery Travel & Living, Nickelodeon, Disney Channel and Cartoon Network. with the TV, it's much easier to breastfeed, since i only need to flick my thumb occasionally to switch channels.

but you know what? i think most women are multi-taskers because we're expected to juggle the duties of being a good mum, wife, daughter, daughter-in-law, staff etc. if you can't multi-task, you're not going to progress much. it's the only way to survive. people are evolving and adapting to the technology age. just look at the gen-yers and how they can so easily pick up computer skills, twiddle and fiddle around their gadgets without even leafing through the instruction manuals.

ah, both hands required now. need to burp my little terrorliza who, by the way, is living up to her nickname for being a terrifying screaming sensation!

yes, if you must know, i was multi-tasking. again.

dirty diapers galore

terrorliza is, pardon the expression, full of shit!

it's the plain truth. i'm not being nasty, just being literal about the whole matter.

my 3-week-old has used up 4 packs of diapers so far - she dirties at an average of about 6 to 7 diapers per day. she started off with a pack of pampers for newborns provided by the hospital but we switched to drypers for newborn because it's more affordable. seriously, at the rate she's pooping and pee-ing, we've got to be prudent in our expenditure.

and because she's 100% on mumsy's milk, her stools are watery and she craps a few times a day. which makes it tough for us to use washable cloth nappies as that would mean we'll have to change her every half an hour, not to mention the mountainous heap of cloth diapers we'd have to wash on a daily basis!

so far, despite having a plastic changing mat, she's soiled the bedsheets a couple of times. especially when her diapers are too wet/dirty and her excretion leaks.

yucks.

and she's even pooed directly on my hand while i was changing her midway.

triple yucks.

the stuff mums have to do for their kids. but hey, after 3 babies, nappy duties are the least of my concerns.

dirty diapers don't scare me one bit.

just bring it!

by the way, check out this rather corny drypers commercial...yes, this is the one specially for newborns.

food, glorious food!

can't wait to be FREEEEE!!!

free to enjoy a nice warm shower as many times a day as i choose.

free to wash my hair daily.

free to eat what i want. what i really REALLY want...

here are the top 10 things i'm looking forward to wolf down when i'm officially released from my month-long confinement:

  • 10) McDonald's McGriddles (haven't tasted it, so i'm curious...)
  • 9) BBQ Stingray and other variety of seafood (with sambal paste...yum!)
  • 8) Laksa with cockles (looking forward to the "harmful" experience...slurp!)
  • 7) Fresh Oysters (pass me the lime and tabasco sauce, quick!)
  • 6) Black Pepper Crabs and Chili Crabs with mantou (i'm greedy for both)
  • 5) Pizza (no preference, but a Juliana or Sophia from Spizza would be great!)
  • 4) Ice Cream (Ben & Jerry's, Häagen-Dazs, Swensen's - i'm not picky, any brand will do!)
  • 3) Pineapples (dunno why, but i crave for pineapple during all my pregnancies!)
  • 2) Sushi (even the supermarket variety is acceptable!)
  • 1) Sashimi (salmon, tuna, squid etc...heavenly!)
oooooooooooooo...

just dreaming about the wonderful food i'm going to feast on will help me pull through the final 2 weeks!

the final 3

as most of you know, during the 2 weeks before i gave birth to terrorliza, i'd taken leave and stayed home to prepare for her delivery.

naturally, with some spare time during the mornings when my older girls were in school, i squeezed out some "me time" and spent the hours surfing the net for - what else - the remaining few LOTR toys missing from my collection.

i tracked down 3 rare (and expensive) figurines, lost some of the bids on ebay (i'm not that desperate to pay hefty sums for the toys, no matter how much i want them, especially since i had to pay for international shipping, plus they were in USD) and finally got them!
FOTR Orc Overseer
FOTR Orc Warrior

TTT Moria Orc

yes, all the hideous orcs which wen calls "mummy's mor-mors" (monsters). they've arrived safely from USA and are peering evilly out from their boxes.
total damage? US$63.52/S$88.41
  • FOTR Orc Overseer and FOTR Orc Warrior: US$8.99 + US$10.99 + US$20.25 (shipping) = US$40.23 /S$55.78
  • TTT Moria Orc: US$10.50 + US$12.99 (shipping) = US$23.29 / S$32.63
the hub didn't even bat an eyelid when the packages arrived from the States. he just shrugged his shoulders and gave me the "whatever makes you happy" look.

anyway, i'm quite certain there aren't any figurines out there left for me to buy. the ones i don't own are the ones i don't really fancy.

so yeah, i think i've just bought the last 3 of the LOTR toybiz figurines i want.

this time, i really think it's the end. :P
