Twenty Two

Hello.

I know. I've disappeared from this social media platform for far too long. I blame it on my own stupidity: co-creating 5 kids, holding a full-time job and attempting to "have-it-all".

Well, some things have just got to give. In my case, it's my love for writing. These days, if I do pen any posts, it's because I've carved aside some time to document something important.

I'll admit that in recent years, I've not paid much attention to the man I married because the primary focus has been on the kids. I've always assumed that the hubs will be by my side no matter what, that he'd always be here for the family.

Then on 6 May 2018, I nearly became a solo parent due to a freak carpentry accident.

I won't go into the details of what happened. That's for another time, another entry. Snippets of the drama are captured on my IG.

Suffice to say, the incident involved rotten wood, electrical blades, a golden chain, a jade Buddha pendant, severed nerves, flesh and skin, and blood.

Lots and lots and lots of blood.

This was followed by an ambulance ride, an ER stint, staycation at TTSH and ongoing medical follow-ups and consultations.

Thankfully, Heaven intervened. The Hubs survived. He literally escaped the jaws of death, and I am ever-so-grateful that he's still here with us.

This episode has jolted me out of complacency and the misguided belief that the Hubs will be by my side forever more. I've come to the realisation that no matter how little time we have left for ourselves, we must cherish every waking moment or live to regret it.

###

Every August, we celebrate the day we decided to spend the rest of our lives together. Unfortunately, any romantic plans are usually thrown out of the window because we'll inevitably be distracted by a child-related reason. This year, we had to rush Kids 1, 4 and 5 to the doctor because, well, FEVER etc. We substituted dinner plans with takeaway pizza. Bonus: the girls got to enjoy a pizza supper.

We eventually squeezed out a few stolen hours the next day to feast on BBQ stingray, cockles and an oyster omelette at Chomp Chomp. And for dessert, we shared a slice of chocolate cake from Awfully Chocolate.

Back in 1996, we made the best and worst decision of our lives. And every single thing we have today - the good, bad and ugly - is the result of that one decision.

Here's to us, Hubs! And many, many more.

22

22 years back
An engagement was pledged
To have and to hold
To cherish and to love
To create and to build
A foundation
To weather all storms
To overcome all odds
To share tears of joy and sorrow

A pact was made
To reach for the stars
To acknowledge limitations
To treasure moments
A union
To last a lifetime
To recognise strengths
To accept weaknesses

22 years since
A partnership was formed
To create memories
To sacrifice pleasures for pain
To solider on in darkness and rain
A promise
To bask in each other’s laughter
To grow older and wiser together
To love till the end of our days

Fifth Born

For En: our Unexpected, Unexplainable, Unpredictable, Unforgettable and Unique one. I truly believe she's our gift from Dad.

Number Five: En
Fifth Born

She's our Lil' Miss Unexpected
The miraculous gift that came our way
Overcoming all odds she finally appeared
On 12 February 2017 Sunday

This unpredictable darling of an Aquarian
Debuted in an unforgettable style
Determined to create a dramatic entrance
Making her existence worth the while

We love our doe-eyed Fire Rooster
Mummy, Daddy, four sisters - who's her greatest fan?
Sending our hearts to a delightful flutter
Our fifth little Leonglet - Sook Yan

My Inspiring Dad

I read this poem as part of the eulogy I delivered at Mandai Crematorium on 19 March 2016, Saturday.

I tried my darnest to be composed, choking back only at the last few lines. Under the circumstances, I think I didn't fare that badly. My uncle caught part of it on film: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UNRDzsJVuec.

I just keep reminding myself Dad HATES tears and how, when I was younger, he would fly off his handle whenever I started to cry. I was always too emotional for my own good and that got me into a whole lot of trouble with Dad.

Well, that's past now. All the crying in the world can't bring him back. And he would be upset if he knows I've been quietly weeping under the blanket or in the shower when no-one else was around.

Everyone tells me how Time will heal all wounds and I know eventually it will. But right now, my feelings are too raw and I've to look for my own coping mechanism to express my grief.

And writing about it is a start.

In Loving Memory of The First Man I’ve ever loved. Rest In Peace Dad.

My Inspiring Dad

The measure of a man is weighed not in gold
But by the richness of his heart
His generous deeds
His riveting stories told

As I listen to all that's shared about you
I'm very much ashamed to admit
There's so much I didn't know
And how so little I actually knew

Growing up I often watched from afar
Always in awe of your commanding presence
Your fiery conviction and passionate beliefs
Traits that define who you are

My rebellious years angered you constantly
You judged me rude, hopeless, incorrigible
I deemed you loveless, tyrannical, unreasonable
When ordered, I obeyed grudgingly

Your words always stung
When you grilled me for my actions
But that's when you'd let slip Life's crucial lessons
And onto them I've since steadfastly clung

Yet I remained stubborn, impertinent
Too eager to prove my worth
Too eager to challenge your views
Because I was juvenile, impatient

I only understood in later years
Why you did what you'd done
When adulthood and parenthood came my way
The wisdom in your words would ring in my ears

Perhaps I didn't turn out the way you hoped
– No fame, no glory, no big money for me
But one easily contended with simple blessings –
Making you worry endlessly about how I coped

Dad, I ask that you have some Faith in me
So don’t despair so quickly
Be rest assured that when darkness falls I'll follow the beacon of your guiding light
Your twin principles: Integrity and Humility

You're a man of your word; your name is your honour
A loyal true friend who puts others before self
A natural born leader whose Empathy and Magnanimity know no bounds
And truly there will never be another

You're the binding force that united strangers
Forging friendships that last through decades
Even when some abuse your Generosity and Trust
You shrugged your shoulders and continued to support others

I am humbled and honoured to have been your Daughter
And I owe you a debt of gratitude which I've yet to repay
Thank you for all you've done for me and the family
Indeed no one could have asked for a better Father

Today you embark on a new journey
To a tranquil place free from suffering, pain and woes
We shall meet again, Dad - no ifs, no buts
So I shan't say farewell for this parting is only temporary

We will all miss you dearly – that you must certainly know
And now there's such a huge void to fill in us all
As much as we dread this moment
We acknowledge it's time to let you go

Here's a final bow and salute to you
(Sir) Richard Teo Cher Aik
You'll remain entrenched in our hearts forever
Rest in Peace and remember always that we love you

Daddy's Dynamite

What do you get for a simple, down-to-earth and super practical dude who isn't really into gadgets or expensive branded goods?

Something you can't swipe off the shelves and wrap up in shimmery paper.

Every time he's a daddy again, he gets a 'birthday' poem from his baby girl. He's got three so far, in the respective following years of the girls' births: 2003, 2006, 2009. And now 2015 after the appearance of our fiery-tempered Fourthborn.

Daddy's Dynamite
I know many envy me
Just 'cos I'm the family's baby
Everyone thinks I get my way
And all I do is eat, sleep, poo and play
They don't know how boring it can be
When I'm up and no other Leonglets are around but me
Too bad my three cheh-chehs are already in school
But Daddy do you know what's really cool?
Yours is the first face I see when I wake
That's right, there's no mistake
I know that voice, that hair, that face
Ain't no other who can take your place
Mummy is functional, I can't deny
My calcium fix on her I rely
But Daddy you're my fun-maker playmate
Though you've got so much on your plate
You settle my morning bath before work takes you away
Sometimes you even pop back home midday
Just to check on how I'm doing
Whether I'm eating right, napping and pooping
And when the Moon lights up the night sky
That's when you'll hear me screech and cry
Cos I refuse to sleep - sleep is for the weak!
I may just be a baby but I certainly am not meek
When you step in and do your Daddy discipline thing
I raise the stakes and get into the ring
I fight and scream till I'm hoarse
Seriously. Am I not the little boss?
No-one else can decipher my need
No-one else takes any heed
Only you can understand my pattern
Rocking the sarong to a swaying rhythm
No trial-and-error, no second guessing
You know my demands when I start fussing
Despite me giving you sleepless nights
You patiently put up with my relentless fights
Thank you for loving me come what may
Hugs and kisses from your littlest dynamite Sook Kei

Dynamite

Incredible how I've let time slip through my fingers.

Last year I was wailing over how Fourthborn was literally taking her own sweet time to meet the world.

And now we're gearing up for her 1st birthday.

This one's for you, Qi.When you grow up and read this, I hope you'll realise the torture you've put as all through.

But we all still love you to bits.

Yes, even when you're totally unreasonable and wake up 3 times in the middle of the night to nurse. And thank you for allowing me at least 3-4 hours sleep everyday. I should be so grateful.

Dynamite

I'm a pint-sized firecracker who doesn't like much to sleep
And this makes my poor caregivers pull their hair and resignedly weep

I'm super duper picky over my caregivers too
Not any Tom, Dick, Harry, Lisa, Mary or Jane will do

There's a priority list of who I fancy
Daddy, Mummy, Big Sis - and that's pretty much for me

I don't like to drink from cups or bottles 'cos I prefer it straight from Mummy
And I'd rather wait to drink from the source even when my tummy's rumbly

True, I may be at the bottom 25% in size and weight
But try messing with me and you'll realise too late

I'm not to be trifled with 'cos I've a nasty temper
And my cranky tantrums are ear-piercing sessions to remember

You may wonder how I get so much energy despite my seemingly poor appetite
Here's my secret: I recharge by snacking on powerbanks and wires 'cos I'm a super dynamite!

Baby Dearest

Ok, I may sound like a soundtrack stuck on repeat mode and I'm pretty certain I've mentioned it before but heck, I'll say it again: Motherhood's an incredible experience.

After a break of 6 years, I've *almost* forgotten what it's like caring for a newborn.  (I'd to unlock my memory bank and sieve through archives to retrieve the data.) But like a plug-and-play device, I was up-and-running, and settled into auto-pilot mode within the first month.

Qi is now 8 weeks old and I'll be heading back to work in a month's time. Mixed feelings all round because much as I love my kids, staying home with them full time drives me hair-pulling bonkers. Furthermore, giving up my job will financially cripple us - not that I make tonnes of money as a polytechnic lecturer but feeding a big family doesn't come cheap and every extra bit helps.

While I may not have the luxury of updating my blog on a regular basis, I do try to capture significant moments of my life so that I won't forget them in time to come. Qi has been difficult in the last few weeks, possibly because she's mastered the art of manipulation and skillfully executes her well-planned manoeuvres to get what she wants. No longer the calm, sleeping newborn who was so easy to care for in the early days.

We've had a fair share of rotten days when she'd yell her lungs out and nothing seemed to pacify her. I'd get frustrated in return and lash out at the older ones (usually Wei) who often fuel my rage by procrastinating, lazing around, squabbling with each other and getting on my nerves with their nonchalant ways and general misbehaviour. Not forgetting the well-meaning advice dispensed which I do appreciate but not necessarily always want to act on because I have differing views. And then everyone becomes unhappy and I berate myself for upsetting the balance in our family.

*SIGH*

Note to self: I need to work on my anger management skills. Harsh words uttered in a fit of anger can't be retracted.

Anyway, I penned this simple poem while everyone was out, leaving both Qi and me alone to enjoy each other's company. Conversation was one-way, although she occasionally grunted, snorted, gurgled, cried and cooed in response.

And then she flashed this wide, heartfelt grin:

In one fell swoop, every ounce of negative energy drained from my pores. Those sleepless nights, the crazy feeding fights, dirty diaper wars and wailing matches were all worth the while.

And all it took was one toothless smile.

Qi, this one's for you.

Baby Dearest

I forgive you when you're super cranky
Screaming down the house

I forgive you being a fussy eater
Regurgitating milk on my blouse

I forgive you for restricting my diet
Making me constantly check your poo

I forgive you for my blood-shot panda eyes
Waking me every other hour or two

I forgive you when you refuse to sleep
Insisting on being rocked and cuddled by me

I forgive you for keeping me up in the wee hours
Cooing and gurgling till three

I forgive you even when you cry for no reason
Understanding you've limited means of communication

I forgive you when you're demanding and loud
Fighting with your sisters for my exclusive attention

I forgive you for every frustration you cause
Knowing it isn't at all deliberate

I forgive you for every little thing my child
Being mum to you, darling girl, is a welcomed fate

Me = Not You

Postnatal blues? Perhaps. Then again, maybe not.

Me = Not You

I am not You
And don't aspire to be
So please respect my decision
And let Me be Me

Don't crucify Me
For my every imperfection
I'll gladly ignore Yours
If You check Your own reflection

I am not You
I have my right to be Me
So please step back
And let Me be Me

Number Four's Ditty

One of the silly songs created to amuse (myself) the kids.

Number Four's Ditty

大姐 (da jie) is the sleepy one
Who can't get out of bed

二姐 (er jie) is the grumpy one
Who sulks from toes to head

三姐 (san jie) is the noisy one
Who loves to yell and scream

And I am the cutesy one
Who's going to be their Queen!

Fourth Born

For my Number Four (who's technically my sixth). As per "tradition", I've written a short little poem for Qi.

Number Four: Qi

Fourth Born

Her arrival was a long time coming
And everyone waited in gleeful anticipation
Three sisters, Mummy and Daddy
All eager to give her their undivided attention

This little sweetie's as cool as can be
To arrive she's obviously in no big hurry
She probably reasoned: what's a few extra days or hours
I'll be there when I'm good and ready

The baby Piscean finally makes a splash
On 4 March 2014 Tuesday
Galloping into the Year of Horse
Our fourth little Leonglet - Sook Kei

The April Fool

The April Fool

Sometimes I question my blind faith and devotion
Sometimes I wonder if I'm doing too little
Because I'm often told I'm not doing enough

Yet I find myself drained because I've given it my all
For all that I've done, it's never quite sufficient
For those who demand my time, heart and soul

Everyone asks for my understanding
But will anyone slip on my shoes for a change?
No - none are Fools like me

Patience is a virtue I grudgingly acknowledge
Endurance is more than completing a marathon
I yearn for simplicity but face complexity

Just because I'm always here
Doesn't mean I'll be here forever
You have limits as do I

Chill

Chill, chill
I'll be fine
Don't vent, don't rant
I'll go have a glass of wine
Wait, I don't drink!
Chocs are the answer I think!

By My Side

As I reach the tail-end of my 30s I've become more conscious of our mortality. Gone are my days where Valentine's Day is celebrated with gifts, chocolates and expensive flowers. These days I'm just happy that my loved ones are in good health and we can live to see another day.

This is for my wonderful husband, the unfortunate soul who's bound to me till we're parted by the Grim Reaper.

By My Side

We never really decided this
You and I
It just happened
We never discussed
We simply accepted
And that's that

Even when we're away from home
We naturally gravitate
To our respective areas
My side
Your side
No exchange of words

We shared this arrangement
For as long as I recall
Since our days together
Over a decade
Or so
And counting

We'll stick to this for as long as we can
Though I can't imagine
The day I turn
And face emptiness
I do think about it sometimes
And wonder how I'll get by

Bonus II

Bonus left us on 6 February 2012. Even though we never met, I still count Bonus as my own, the one I'd lost. It's been a year and whoever said time heals is a liar. Perhaps it will get better. We'll see.

It's been exactly a year
And I still remember
How I was wheeled in there
The cold, clinical air
The blinding light's sinister glare
The rehearsed reassurances
The masked faces
The contraption over my breathing orifices

Since it's only been a year
I can vividly remember
When a second opinion confirmed the worst
The dreaded news I feared most
That wretched day my world took a tumble
And my life began to crumble
The unbearable concoction of pain and woe
The thought of letting you go

I desperately wanted some closure
I wanted you out forever
Yet I was silently grieving
Destroyed by your leaving
But what choice did I have? None
You were already too far gone
Your heart didn't register a beep
You weren't mine to keep

Yes, it happened last year
But every once in a while I still shed a tear
When I meet soon-to-be mummys
I envy their blissfully bulging tummys
When I see newborns lovingly cradled
Their tiny bodies carefully swaddled
The lump in my throat refuses to leave
Onto broken dreams I stupidly cleave

It's been a year
And sometimes I do wonder
If you'd joined our family tree
Which branch would you be?
Who would you take after?
In looks, traits and character?
But that's not to be
You weren't meant to be my baby

And so it's been a year
Exactly 365 days my dear
That you were taken from me
Via D&C surgery
I still cry and mourn
Over my loss and unborn
Perhaps it will take me much longer
Before I can fully heal and recover

Will you be there to greet me at the gates?
The day I leave to meet my fate?
Will you come up to me and say:
Sorry, Mummy. I'm the one who couldn't stay
But I'm here now to show you the way
Then you'd reach out and take my hand
And gently lead me to the new land
Leaving our footprints in the sand

Skeletina

This morning as I watched Xian get dressed for school, she pulled off her PJ top to reveal a bag of ribs.

Sigh.

My firstborn's shooting up fast yet she's not filling up sideways. She complained her pinafore's getting short (I just bought her a bigger size this year) but the huge armholes highlight her horizontally-challenged frame.

I suppose it's a typical mum's worry about her seeming "lack of nutrition". Years from now she may be chastising me for trying to fatten her up once she hits the age when maintaining a reed-thin figure is considered a consummate beauty regime.

This reminded me of a silly ditty I created for each of my kids a couple years ago, each based on a certain characteristic or physical attribute. I never wrote them down but now I think I should in case my memory fails me in my later years.

Hers is titled Skeletina and it comes complete with eerie-spooky original music too. Heh.

And yes, I've also written her a personal note on my other blog that I started as open letters to my kids.

Skeletina

Ske-le-ti-na
Ske-le-ti-na
She's a boney girl

Ske-le-ti-na
Ske-le-ti-na
In a boney world

Ske-le-ti-na
Ske-le-ti-na
She is very thin

Ske-le-ti-na
Ske-le-ti-na
She's all bones and skin

Lost

Lost

It's a new day
And I shall endeavour
To embrace new beginnings
And challenges

Let the Lost be at peace
But not forgotten
For they will live on
In my heart and mind

Till I too perish
And become but a faded memory
Only to eventually disappear
Altogether

Perhaps I will then reunite
With the Lost
In a different dimension
Where we will be free

I know not what lies beyond
Or where my life journey will lead
But I look to the day
When I am lost no more

The End of a Kool Era

This one's for a dear colleague-turned-great friend who's heading back to the corporate world after 2 years and 10 months of teaching. She's made a difference to the students' lives and I know she'll be missed by many. Especially me.

Thanks Lilian, for all that you've done for the students and colleagues. Perhaps you'll be back sooner than you think?! Here's wishing you all the very best in whatever you do!

Ms Kool, my lovely neighbour
A True Friend

I knew the day would come
And it arrived too soon for some
But I'd be lying if I say
I won't miss you when you go away

It's not just 'cos you're a lunch buddy
It's not just 'cos you're a fellow 6-7 matey
It's not just 'cos you're my confidante
It's not just 'cos we work the same way

Thank you for your patience and listening ear
And for not passing judgement whenever I shed a tear
Thank you for trading stories and battle scars
Most of all, for being a gem among the stars

I won't say good-bye
Since I promised not to cry
True Friends we'll always be
And that's a solemn promise from me

The Man I Love

Heartfelt words for the love of my life.

Happy Birthday to my wonderful husband and loving father to our children!

The Man I love

He's an obstinate perfectionist
But he's not perfect
Then again, neither am I
So it matters little to me
That his flaws exist
'Cos that's the way he is

He's an unsung hero
Silently working behind the scenes
To make others shine
While they unabashedly accept credit
For his understated brilliance
For work that's not even their own

He's determined, proud and strong
That's what others see
In truth he's created an armour
An illusion to deceive
To cloak his vulnerability
His heart of pure gold

His sacrifices usually go unnoticed
His actions often misunderstood
I sense his disappointment
His heartfelt dejection
Of being betrayed
When best intentions are mistaken

It angers me to the core
When others take him for granted
Foist upon him outrageous demands
Or unreasonable expectations
The grievous injustice of it all
But I can offer no solutions

Many times I wish
He'd cut himself some slack
He drives himself too hard
He gives himself too little
Often I try to tell him this
And I wonder if he ever listens

Despite my humble efforts
To stay understanding and supportive
I'm ashamed to say
I'm also responsible
For adding on to his burden
When I should be his pillar

I made my choice years ago
And I'm not backing out any time now
I acknowledge his vices
I embrace his virtues
He's no Mr Universe
But he means the world to me

Let Me Be

Let Me Be

I detest social gatherings
where cackling vultures huddle
to gossip
to boast
to put others down
and burn their names to toast

I abhor congregations
where snooty women gather
to compete
to compare
to damage others' reputation
way beyond repair

I hate silent rendezvous
where whisperers assemble
to scheme
to plot
to cast votes
and seal the fates of our lot

Leave me alone
I want nothing more
Than to disassociate myself
From these vile, cruel hearts
From these senseless superstitions
That break people and families apart

Let me out
Spare me from such sessions
Let me be
I want no part in such liaisons
Let me break free
From the clutches of senseless traditions

Let me be who I am
Not who you want me to be
Not who I ought to be
Please unshackle these chains
And let me be
Let me be me

Old Bones

It has begun.

I've noticed that my knee joints are starting to clack and creak when I stand for too long and then make a sudden movement.

I'm pushing 40 in two years. My body parts are beginning to show signs of wear and tear. Perhaps it's time I take a serious look at my health and start making retirement plans.

*SIGH*

Old Bones

Clack clack creak
Me bones they start to speak
Truth be told
Me fast growing old
Clack clack creak

Bonus

In memory of Bonus, the little one we lost.

You were a pleasant surprise we didn't expect
The delight we believed too good to be true
We silently rejoiced with anticipation of welcoming you

You would have been our Number Four
We even dubbed you our little "bonus"
And we could hardly wait for you to join us

But shadows constantly clouded my mind
And a niggling, prickling doubt persisted
While a morbid mortal fear festered

And in the midst of CNY festivities
Our celebrations were cruelly cut short
Confirmation came that your tiny heart beat not

Guilt. Grief. Blame. Despair.
What did I do? What did I not do?
That could have done this to you?

Despite the hopes and prayers
There was little anyone could do
There was no miracle in the world to save you

With no options, the decision was perfectly clear
And in our final agonising days together
I prayed fervently that you never did suffer

Three deep breaths on fateful Monday
In an uneasy slumber I drifted on
And when I roused you were gone

I will never be able to cuddle you
I will never see your smiles, laughter or tears
Neither will I ever get to comfort or soothe your fears

I will never get the chance to sing or read to you
I will never see you kick, crawl and run
Worse of all, I will never hear you call me "Mum"

Maybe it was a blessing you were taken early
Before your development was complete
Before you grew organs, little hands and feet

Still, you were a creation of love
A life, a living being
Viciously denied the opportunity of existing

I shall not lie and say it doesn't hurt
Perhaps in time these emotional scars will heal
But for now the pain is much too real

This chapter has ended and we must move on
Though you are no more physically
You will always live on in our memory

May you be at peace in a better place
Where you're loved, cherished and cared for
Goodbye Bonus, my would-have-been Number Four
